Sherry K Jamming in the Schools

Along with her rigorous concert schedule, Sherry K spends much of her time in the schools, sharing her passion and enthusiasm for music with kids. Her program is entitled "Keep Practicing: A Pianist's Journey". It consists of old jazz novelty pieces, television/movie themes, classical works, as well as original music from her latest CDs. With considerable emphasis placed on motivating young students, she keeps the setting light, fast paced and fun, including a segment describing her experiences as a piano student starting at the age of 3 years old.

Other elements of the program may include:

• Illustration of various musical styles, including some history and exploration of several genres and composers.
• Emphasis on improvisation, utilizing the piano as if it were an orchestra or band.
• Demonstration of Sherry K’s original compositions--relaying how experimentation in styles has led to recording projects, including descriptions of the studio experience itself.
• Discussion of numerous options for those considering careers in music---again, emphasizing styles of music and opportunities available:
• Do I want to play in a country band?
• Do I want to play in a pit orchestra for an opera?
• Do I want to be a songwriter?
• Do I want to be a church organist?
• Do I want to sing in a Broadway show?

The length of the program varies, depending on the needs of the teachers. Typically, it runs between 30 and 45 minutes. Each performance is customized to suit the interest of all ages and is received best when the students are divided into smaller groups.

Fees are $250 for a single performance, $350 for a half day of performances, and $500 for a full day of performances, Artist in Residence program-$2,500 plus expenses. Discounts may apply if the performance of your school is combined with another school within a 30-mile radius. Music programs everywhere are "at risk", due to declining or eliminated funding, so many schools have come up with some creative ways to raise funds for just this kind of program enrichment. Some tap into sources such as their local PTA/PTO, local philanthropic organizations such as Tri Kappa (in Indiana), Tri M (Music Honor Society), or even community business leaders who are supportive of the arts.

The way that Sherry keeps the audience involved throughout the entire program is essential to the success of her show espcially for high schoolers. With questions about music, composers, and even a little Simpsons and Bumble Bee Boogie, their attention was drawn in for the entire hour! When everyone was on their feet at the end, I knew that this opportunity was well worth while and that these students had an experience they'd never forget!"
